Elisa – Small Talker
- Client: ELISA
- Agency: BOB THE ROBOT
- Production Company: MJÖLK
- Post Production: TROLL VFX
- Color Grading: JAMES POST
Troll provided some small scale VFX work for Elisa’s latest campaign, doing fairly basic but still appropriately difficult screen replacement work for a number of spots. Doing this stuff properly is surprisingly challenging since everything from tracking to compositing has to be near perfect to truly sell the forgery.
I managed the project at Troll, doing the conforming work in Hiero for around thirty shots and compositing in Nuke. The rest of the compositing team consisted of Joonas Yliruusi, Ari Huuskonen and Matthias Backmann while Molla Karjaluoto held the responsibilities of a producer.
Fun fact of the day: compositing bright footage to a black screen with things like skin or hair overlapping is really hard. No matter how good you make the key or roto, the colours just never match unless you take the time to slowly and carefully grade and paint them in.
It’s always a good idea to preserve as much of the original screen as possible when inserting footage. Dirt, reflections and all that stuff are needed to make composite work.
When your track needs to be absolutely perfect, you usually need to do all of it manually frame by frame. Slow? Sure, but if that’s what it takes then that’s what you have to do.
